News Update Feb 2022: Magic Mushrooms in Mississippi
With each passing year, humankind continues to progress in several aspects. From ideologies to science and technology, humans have improved. We see it happen in some aspects while others innovate each year. Compared to what life was like over a decade ago, one can say that humans have come a rather long way in terms of progress.
Of course, progress is a broad term that can be interpreted differently. The meaning of progress could differ from one field to another, and this depends on where you’re coming from. For example, science has seen much progress in what it knows about magic mushrooms.
Unbeknownst to many people, magic mushrooms have been around for centuries. Of course, their usage was more notable during the 70s and 80s, and people were experimenting with psychedelics at that time. However, they’ve been around much longer than that. Ancient peoples used these psychedelics for different purposes, ranging from medicine to a tool to assist with meditation.
One could argue that the people in the 70s and 80s also used shrooms for meditation purposes. Others used it for “tripping out” and going on out-of-body experiences through magic mushrooms. However, compared to the ancient societies, its use may have become more casual. But, whatever the case may be, it’s hard to deny that these shrooms affected people, and shrooms helped them change the way they saw things.
Unfortunately, magic mushrooms earned a bad reputation. Shrooms became an illegal substance- an entirely different topic for another time. This resulted in people having fewer chances to experience these shrooms for themselves.
However, mushrooms seem to have been rid of society for good. But recent developments in science and research have helped bring it back to light. This time, though, for a good reason. Shrooms are now seen as a possible medical treatment. Besides being an inducer of mystical experiences, this will be used to treat specific disorders.
Despite its scientific progress, the public’s perception hasn’t seen much improvement. The general population still sees these mushrooms as evil and refuses to believe that shrooms have any benefit. As of now, there hasn’t been much progress in most places in the US. However, this doesn’t mean there hasn’t been any progress at all.
Shrooms in Mississippi
With a few exceptions, most states in the US still view psychedelics as illegal. Specifically, magic mushrooms in Mississippi containing psilocybin are considered schedule 1 drugs. A substance classified as Schedule 1 has a high potential for abuse. This also has not been currently approved for medical use. As such, substances like psilocybin mushrooms are controlled substances.
In a place like Mississippi, laws on psilocybin mushrooms are rather strict. Since psilocybin mushrooms are a controlled substance, they are illegal. This means that having them in your possession will get you in trouble. More specifically, you will end up with a felony charge. The same goes if you are caught growing or selling these mushrooms.
Mississippi Spore Legality
Surprisingly, many states aren’t so harsh about having mushroom spores. This is despite shrooms being illegal in most of the United States. Shroom spores can be used for scientific research. Another reason is that it doesn’t contain psilocybin, making it harmless. As such, having spores is still legal.
Unfortunately, this is not the case in Mississippi. Similar to possessing shrooms is considered illegal, so goes with spores. The state argues that they could still grow the psychedelic mushroom. This is despite not having the psychedelic compounds in them. So, to prevent production, possessing spores is also considered illegal.
Possessing psilocybin mushrooms will get you charged with a felony. However, having spores is not that severe. A misdemeanor offense will be charged once caught with shroom spores in possession.
The consequence will also change once you get caught growing spores into shrooms. This is essentially manufacturing a controlled substance. Even if all you have are the spores, you will serve some time in jail. If that wasn’t bad enough, you might even end up facing a felony charge too.
The Future of Psychedelics
The laws on controlled substances would be hard to reconsider. This is due to places like Mississippi with strict laws on psychedelic substances. It might seem like this mushroom’s benefits may not be enough to convince them. This is considering that the state has rather conservative views. However, that shouldn’t put a stopper to your hopes.
It would be hard to deny scientific progress. This is no matter how many states are conservative with these substances. Proof of this can be seen in states that have decided to change how they look at shrooms. Some cities have already decided to take a step towards progress, and these cities have already decriminalized these mushrooms. One state, Oregon, has even opted to legalize them for medical use.
More and more studies have come forward showing the medical benefits of being an alternative to antidepressants to care for terminally ill patients. These studies are undeniable proof of the benefits these psychedelics have.
So, in the case of Mississippi, it’s only a matter of time before they start to change their view on shrooms. Of course, it won’t be happening anytime soon as these things take some time. With the proof of its benefit becoming more apparent, more states will see the good over the bad and adapt to the change.
